What is cancer-related fatigue?

Cancer-related fatigue is a consistent feeling of tiredness caused by cancer or cancer treatments. The tiredness may prevent you from doing your daily activities.

This feeling may not be relieved by rest or sleep. Fatigue can be from physical, mental or emotional stressors.

Signs and symptoms of cancer-related fatigue

  • Tiredness that doesn’t get better with rest or sleep

  • More tired than usual during or after an activity

  • Feeling tired without physical activity

  • Lacking energy to participate in daily activities

  • Arms and legs feel heavy or hard to move

  • Weakness

  • Sleeping more

  • Staying in bed for more than 24 hours

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Confusion

  • Inability to concentrate

Causes of cancer-related fatigue

  • Cancer treatments including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, immunotherapy, and transplants.

  • Poor nutrition

  • Dehydration

  • Anemia

  • Medicines

  • Emotions
